Then, in future games, Activision adopted the battle pass system first seen in Fortnite, a free-to-play game, and applied it to their full-price titles. Meanwhile, new weapons added to the game could only be earned during specific events or by paying over a hundred dollars for certain loot boxes. The best weapons, naturally, were the rarest. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, the prior Infinity Ward game, had random stat allocation given to certain weapon tiers that can be earned from loot boxes. Activision has long-since polluted Call of Duty and other beloved series' with rampant microtransactions that have, in many cases, offered paying players direct advantages in competitive environments. This pervasive anti-consumerism isn't new to Activision, even if it is especially biting during a pandemic. What would initially just be an expected, frustrating practice that has plagued Call of Duty and similar blockbuster titles for years is exponentially more obnoxious due to the pervading coronavirus quarantine that has the entire world locked up in their rooms with little to do. What initially had users disappointed due to a lack of multiplayer (the real selling point of MW2) now has fans enraged at the exclusivity as well. However, this surprise release comes alongside a package deal for Modern Warfare 2019 and its companion battle royale, Warzone. Originally leaked in 2018, the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign remaster seems to have been in development for quite some time having been revealed thanks to a trademark filing, an Amazon listing, and using of the older IW Engine.

An exclusivity deal is very much a product of the past generation, with cross-play becoming more common amongst multiplayer titles and many exclusivity deals becoming more open to entering the PC market. Rightfully so, Activision and Infinity Ward are earning a lot of negative buzz for this online, since they're doubling down on the much-maligned practice of console-exclusivity on a multi-platform major release, something they also took flak for when Modern Warfare launched with a specific Spec Ops mode only available for PS4.

While companies are finding some generosity in their corporate hearts, Activision seems to have failed to read the room, opting to not change their attitude during such dire times. The beloved game is inexplicably exclusive to the PlayStation 4 for a month. The surprise ( but not really) release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered adds yet another notch to Activision's long history of anti-consumer practices.
